Search has a new front page. Is your brand on it?

Google AI Overviews, AI Mode and assistants like ChatGPT now answer questions before anyone clicks a link. Here is what that means for brands, and the practical steps that keep you visible.

The shift in one sentence

For twenty years the goal of search was to rank. In 2026, the goal is to be the brand the answer is built from.

When a buyer asks "which agency should I hire for SEO in Dubai?" or "best packaging supplier for D2C brands in India", a growing share of them get a written summary at the top of Google, or an answer inside ChatGPT, Gemini or Perplexity. The brands named in that answer win attention. The brands that are not named may never be seen, even if they rank on page one.

What the data is showing

Industry studies throughout 2026 point in the same direction. A large analysis by Seer Interactive, covering billions of impressions across dozens of brands, found that organic click-through rates fall sharply on queries where an AI Overview appears. The same research found that brands cited inside the AI Overview earned noticeably more organic and paid clicks than competitors that were not cited. (Seer Interactive)

Three practical conclusions follow:

  • Informational content is hit hardest. "What is" and "how to" pages lose the most clicks, because the answer is given on the results page.
  • Commercial and local intent holds up better. Searches close to a purchase, such as pricing, comparisons and "near me", still send meaningful traffic.
  • Being cited is the new ranking. Citation inside the AI answer appears to protect, and even grow, both organic and paid performance.

Why some brands get cited and others don't

AI systems summarise what they can understand and trust. In our work with clients, the brands that appear most often share a few traits:

  • A clear, consistent entity. The same description of who you are, what you do and where you operate, repeated across your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn and directories.
  • Answer-first content. Pages that state the answer in the first two or three sentences, then go deeper with evidence and examples.
  • Third-party proof. Mentions in publications, industry lists, reviews and community discussions. AI models weigh what others say about you, not only what you say about yourself.
  • Technical access. Fast pages, clean HTML, structured data, and no accidental blocking of search or AI crawlers.

A five-step plan for the next 90 days

  1. Audit your AI visibility. Write 20 to 50 questions your buyers really ask. Run them in Google, ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity, and record whether you are mentioned, cited or absent.
  2. Fix your foundations. Align your brand description everywhere, add Organization, Service and FAQ schema, and make sure key pages load fast on mobile.
  3. Rewrite your money pages answer-first. Lead every service page with a direct 40 to 60 word answer, then add FAQs that mirror real questions.
  4. Earn mentions, not just links. Pitch expert commentary, publish original data, and get listed where your industry looks for recommendations.
  5. Measure differently. Track AI referrals in analytics, branded search growth in Search Console, and your citation rate across assistants each month.

What this means for your budget

AI search does not make SEO less important; it makes lazy SEO irrelevant. The budget that once went into volume content is better spent on fewer, more authoritative pages, digital PR, and brand building that earns mentions. Paid search also benefits: when your brand is cited in the answer, the evidence suggests your ads perform better too.

Frequently asked questions

Will AI Overviews reduce my website traffic?
For purely informational pages, often yes. For commercial pages and for brands that are cited inside the answer, the impact is smaller and can even be positive.
What is the difference between SEO, AEO and GEO?
SEO helps you rank in search results, AEO structures content so it can be quoted as a direct answer, and GEO strengthens the signals AI models use to understand, trust and recommend your brand.
How quickly can a brand improve its AI visibility?
Technical and content fixes can show results within weeks. Authority signals such as mentions and reviews build over three to six months.
